Fore Street, Probus, Cornwall. Around 1913

A view looking east towards the centre of the village. Truck Hill is behind the camera. A number of people pose for the camera including two men from Thomas J. Teague's, Monumental Mason's marble works on the left, a man on a horse and cart, two boys and young child. Further up the road can be seen two ladies and two men in the distance. The lady standing in the centre of the road looking towards the camera has the same hairstyle, with a bow, and clothing as the lady with two children outside the Cornwall County Police station in photograph TRURI : PROct.6. She is also standing in the road outside the Police Constable's home/station in this photograph which gives reason to believe that she is the village constable's wife, Maud Prust (nee Westcott), aged 26. The young child standing with the two young lads is dressed, except for the bonnet, in very similar clothing to the standing child in TRURI : PROct.6. Given the body language of the lady and the two young lads, it would suggest that the child is under their care, with the lady keeping an eye on her child and the lads and not posing for the photograph. Given the research conducted for photograph TRURI : PROct.6, this would put the date of the photograph around 1913. Photographer: Samuel John Govier

Sir Robert Harveys bungalow at Trenowth (near Grampound Road) in the parish of Probus, Cornwall. 17th June 1904

By 1996 the bungalow had been much altered into two cottages and the cottage on the right named Bat Lodge. Cornishman, Robert Harvey (1847-1930) was a prominent producer in the nitrate industry of the late 1800s, making his fortune in Bolivia, Peru and Chile before returning to Cornwall in 1885. On his return, he purchased Trenowth Estate and invested in the Cornish tourism industry by going into partnership with architect Silvanus Trevail, George Hicks and John Jose to form the Cornish Hotels Company. He served as High Sheriff in both Devon and Cornwall towards the turn of the century and was knighted in 1901. He also served as President of the Royal Institution of Cornwall between 1901-1903. Chapel converted to a barn at Golden, Probus, Cornwall. Around 1925

The granite pillars in the farm yard came from the old Truro Market House. Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect
