The bridge was designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and opened in 1858 and has two piers and two spans of wrought iron arches with a total length of 535 feet (163 metres). The bridge has a width of 82 feet (25 metres) and is painted green, which matches its surroundings, and is one of three bridges that cross the river between Chelsea and Battersea, alongside Albert Bridge and Battersea Bridge.
