Alec Douglas-Home Collection

Alec Douglas-Home was a British politician and the 14th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 1963 to October 1964. He was born in London, England and educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He served as a Member of Parliament for Kinross and West Perthshire from 1931 to 1945, then for Lanark from 1950 to 1974. During his political career he held several ministerial posts including Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1960–1963). As Prime Minister he sought to strengthen Britain's ties with Europe while maintaining its links with the Commonwealth. His government introduced legislation on housing, education, health care reform and trade union reform. His tenure as Prime Minister ended when Labour won the 1964 general election by a narrow margin. After leaving office he became Lord Home of The Hirsel in 1974 until his death in 1995 at age 92.
