Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1894 to 1895. He was born in London in 1847 and educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He entered politics as a Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Darlington in 1880. In 1885 he became Foreign Secretary under William Gladstone and later served as Home Secretary under Lord Salisbury. In 1894 he succeeded Gladstone as Prime Minister and led the Liberal Party to victory in the 1895 general election. During his premiership he sought closer ties with Europe, particularly France, but failed to pass major legislation due to opposition from within his own party.
