Herbert Henry Asquith was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. He was born in Morley, Yorkshire, England on September 12th 1852. After graduating from Oxford University he began his political career in 1886 when he was elected to Parliament for East Fife. He held various posts in the Liberal government before becoming Prime Minister in 1908 and leading Britain through World War I until 1916. Asquith's legacy includes introducing social reforms such as pensions for the elderly and free school meals for children, as well as introducing legislation that gave women over 30 the right to vote and creating the Labour Exchanges which provided employment opportunities for people out of work. His time in office saw Britain become a major world power and he is remembered today as one of Britain's most influential politicians of all time.
