Henry Campbell-Bannerman Collection

Henry Campbell-Bannerman was a British Liberal Party politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1905 to 1908. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1836 and educated at Glasgow University and Trinity College, Cambridge. He entered politics in 1868 when he was elected to Parliament for Stirling Burghs. During his time as Prime Minister, he introduced a number of progressive reforms including old age pensions, free school meals and labour exchanges. He also oversaw the introduction of an income tax and the creation of a Ministry of Health. His government also passed legislation granting women the right to vote in parliamentary elections. Campbell-Bannerman died suddenly while still serving as Prime Minister in 1908 at his home near London's Hyde Park Corner.
