Ramsay MacDonald Collection

Ramsay MacDonald (1866-1937) was a British politician who served as the first Labour Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1924 to 1929 and again from 1931 to 1935. He was born in Lossiemouth, Scotland, and educated at the University of Cambridge. He began his political career in 1906 when he was elected to Parliament as a Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Leicester. In 1911, he joined the Labour Party and became its leader in 1921. As Prime Minister, MacDonald sought to implement social reforms such as improved housing conditions for working-class citizens and increased unemployment benefits. His government also enacted legislation that provided free school meals for children from low-income families and established a minimum wage for certain occupations. Despite his successes, MacDonald's premiership ended with his resignation over an economic crisis caused by Britain's return to the gold standard in 1925.
