Stratford is a town in east London, England and is located in the London Borough of Newham and lies 6 miles (10 km) east-northeast of Charing Cross, historically part of Essex until 1965 when it became part of Greater London and has been an important settlement since the Roman times and was home to William Shakespeare from 1590 to 1613. The town has grown rapidly since the 19th century due to its proximity to central London and its excellent transport links, including Stratford International station which opened in 2009 as part of the High Speed 1 rail link between St Pancras International station and Kent. Today, a vibrant area with many shops, restaurants and leisure facilities as well as being home to Westfield Stratford City shopping centre – one of Europe's largest urban shopping centres – which opened in 2011.
