Petworth Collection

Petworth is a small market town in the Chichester district of West Sussex, England and is located on the A285 road between Chichester and Haslemere, and is approximately 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Chichester. A population of around 4,000 people and covers an area of 1,539 hectares (3,812 acres). The town was once an important staging post on the London to Portsmouth road and has a long history dating back to Saxon times when it was known as Peforde or Peforda. Today it is known for its beautiful Georgian architecture and its picturesque setting in the South Downs National Park. It also boasts many historic buildings including Petworth House which was built in 1688 by Charles Seymour for his wife Elizabeth Percy, Countess of Northumberland. The house contains one of Britain's finest art collections with works by Turner, Van Dyck and Reynolds among others. Other attractions include Petworth Park with its deer park and lakeside walks as well as several independent shops selling local produce such as cheese from nearby farms.
