The tempting serpent EMM01/01/042 Featured Wells Print

The tempting serpent EMM01/01/042

Wells Cathedral, Somerset. Watercolour, by Elsie Matley Moore, of a 14th century stained glass window at Wells Cathedral, depicting the tempting serpent. A handwritten note on the painting reads: 'The tempting serpent, which is unusually well preserved. Its body and the trunk of the tree round which it twines are mainly of old glass. The blue of the body is here and there slightly stained with yellow, which gives it a delicate green tint. Two pieces of the body have been renewed, and the blue of these is of a purplish hue: this is the more strange as the new blue in the rest of the window is of an admirable hue', from The Very Reverend J Armitage Robinson, 1942

William Hogarth Four Times of the Day - Evening Featured Wells Print

William Hogarth Four Times of the Day - Evening

Vintage engraving of showing a scene from William Hogarth's Four Times of the Day. They are humorous depictions of life in the streets of London, the vagaries of fashion, and the interactions between the rich and poor. Evening takes place slightly outside the built-up area of the city, with views of rolling hills and wide evening skies. A pregnant woman and her husband attempt to escape from the claustrophobic city by journeying out to the fashionable Sadler's Wells

Customs and Traditions - Well Dressing - Tissington, Derbyshire

An example of the custom of well dressing to be found in Tissington, Derbyshire. The custom dates back to the mid 14th Century and the time of the Black Death. Folklore has it that the purity of the water in the five wells of Tissington kept the village from being ravished by the plague. Another story relates the the severe drought suffered in 1615, when the wells never ran dry. In each case, the well dressing arose from the villagers gratitude
