The inscription reads "This fountain is given by Gertrude Countess of Pembroke in memory of happy days in Wilton trusting that it will be a comfort to all passers by and thirsty animals A.D. 1901". The home of the Earls of Pembroke for over 400 years, Wilton House dates from the 16th century although it has undergone frequent alterations.
