Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, (1887 1976), Montgomery was in command the 3rd division assault on Northern France in 1944. The military manoeuvre began in the early hours of June 6th and included British, Canadian and U.S forces. General Montgomery was famous for his command of the Eighth Army in the North African campaign and his defeat of Erwin Rommel at the Battle of El Alamein. He had previously served in World War One, during which he won the D.S.O. Date: 1944

Photograph of FM Bernard Montgomery with Marshal Rokossovsky, 10 May 1945.From a collection of 23 official photographs relating to the campaign in Northwest Europe, World War Two, 1942-1945.Montgomery commanded 21st Army Group (comprising the British 2nd Army, 1st Canadian Army and attached US Army units) during its advance across Holland and north Germany. On 4 May 1945, after weeks of fierce fighting, Montgomery received the surrender of the German forces opposed to him at Luneberg Heath near Hamburg. Marshal Rokossovsky was one of the Red Army?s finest commanders during the war and led the 2nd Belorussian Front across East Prussia, northern Poland and into Germany. At the end of April 1945 his soldiers linked up with Montgomery's forces in northern Germany. Date: 1944
