EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Trevor Page, we are transported to the rural landscapes of Qidong in Jiangsu, China. The image showcases a group of hardworking farmers diligently clearing aquatic vegetation from an irrigation canal using traditional bamboo poles. With hopes of catching any surviving fish, some of the poles are equipped with small mesh nets. However, behind this seemingly idyllic scene lies a pressing issue that plagues water bodies across China - eutrophication caused by agricultural runoff. The excessive nutrients from fertilizers and pesticides used in farming have led to the choking growth of algae and other plants in these waters. As we observe the dominant green hues surrounding the canal bank, it becomes evident that this is not just another routine task for these men. It is a battle against time and nature's imbalance. Their straw hats and waders serve as shields against both the scorching sun above and murky waters below. Beyond their immediate surroundings lie houses nestled amidst fields of rapeseed and corn crops - symbols of sustenance for their village. Yet, they also represent a delicate balance between progress and preservation. This powerful photograph serves as a reminder that sustainable practices must be embraced to protect our precious water resources while ensuring food security for communities like Qidong.
