Why Austria has no right to exist, blood on blood (colour litho)
2808708 Why Austria has no right to exist, blood on blood (colour litho) by Beltrame, Achille (1871-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Because Austria has no right to exist, blood for blood. Brothers! Brothers! in the fight, the Czechs and Slovaks shouted about Valbella. They were looking in the middle of the Austrian ranks for the people of their blood. Voices of hate, Magyar voices answered. Soon there were gasps. But someone was still looking, calling, Brothers! Brothers! Suddenly, in the sound of battle, a cry answered, a cry that was of superhuman joy. From a hole an Austrian soldier jumped up, rushed towards a Czech soldier. To that cry another answered and died in a silent embrace. Two brothers not only from their homeland but by blood, two born by the same mother had found themselves in the midst of the battle. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Why Austria has no right to exist, blood on blood" captures a powerful and poignant moment during World War I. The image depicts the aftermath of a fierce battle, with smoke billowing in the background and the devastated landscape strewn with corpses and rubble. In this chaotic scene, two soldiers from opposing sides lie side by side in death's embrace. They are not just enemies on the battlefield but brothers united by blood. The caption reveals that amidst the hatred and violence, these two men recognized their shared heritage as Czechs and Slovaks fighting against Austrian forces. The illustration serves as a reminder of the senselessness of war and its ability to tear families apart. It highlights how national borders can divide people who are fundamentally connected through their common ancestry. The artist Achille Beltrame skillfully portrays both destruction and humanity in this artwork. Through his detailed brushstrokes, he captures the raw emotions of comradeship, sacrifice, and tragedy that were prevalent during World War I. This print is a haunting testament to the futility of war while also emphasizing our shared humanity across nations. It serves as a somber reflection on history's lessons and reminds us why it is crucial to strive for peace instead of perpetuating conflict based on arbitrary divisions such as nationality or ethnicity.
