EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a French artisan from the 16th century. The image, created by renowned artist Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard, showcases a carpenter in his work clothes diligently using a plane to shape wood. Surrounding him are various carpentry tools displayed in the foreground, while pieces of exquisite church furniture can be seen in the background. Handcolored with meticulous detail, this illustration is part of Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) published in Paris in 1867. This book was an extension of Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from the 12th to 15th centuries.
