EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable wooden and gilded pastiglia reliquary box, created by the French School in the 13th century. Housed in the Diocesan Museum of Duomo Monreale in Sicily, Italy, this exquisite piece once held a portion of the mortal remains of St. Louis IX. For centuries, it resided within a marble sarcophagus dedicated to the King of France in the right nave of Monreale Cathedral. Originally believed to be a wedding box or gift, this intricately crafted reliquary box displays stunning female figures, botanical elements, and majestic eagles. The corners are adorned with metal sections made from gilded copper that has been embossed and chiseled with repeated geometric motifs.
