EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Early English terrestrial globe, dating back to approximately 1673. Crafted by the skilled hands of William Berry and Robert Morden, this remarkable piece is a true testament to the artistry and scientific knowledge of its time. Measuring at a height of 53 cm, this globe features twelve meticulously hand-colored engraved gores and two polar calottes. The cartouche proudly displays the inscription "A New TERRESTRIAL GLOBE" indicating its novelty in that era. It was made and sold by Morden and Berry at their respective establishments near the Royal Exchange in Cornhill and between York House and the New Exchange in London's Strand. The continents on this globe are adorned with depictions of animals, natives, ships, sea monsters, and rhumb lines across vast seas. Notably absent is an Antarctic continent while Australia is only partially delineated to the West and North. California appears as an island while Canada lacks Western or Northern coastlines. Southern Greenland is depicted as a series of islands. China stands out with rivers winding through its landscape alongside major cities located east of the Great Wall. The peninsula of Corea (Korea) also finds representation on this magnificent creation. Supported by a graduated brass meridian ring within a horizon ring featuring engraved calendrical scales, it rests upon a stunning walnut and oak stand with six legs connected by cross stretchers under a central plate. Six bun feet complete this extraordinary display piece. With every detail carefully crafted, this Early English terrestrial globe offers us insight into both historical cartography techniques as well as artistic expression from centuries past.
