701095 Coach makers adjustable compass ploughs, mid 19th century (wood, gunmetal & sprung steel) (see also 701094) by Falconer, Thomas (19th Century) (attr. to); David Russell Collection; (add.info.: Left, 631, stained mahogany, 17.1cm. Right, 632, ebony, 17.5cm
The single stem fitting into the stock is strengthened on both by the sturdy lower gun-metal plate reminiscent of the steel plate on Gabriels ploughs made some decades earlier. The sprung-steel thread-adjustable fence on both allows use for circular and compassed work. However, there are major differences. On 631 the peg handle makes for easier handling than the squirrel tail on 632, and the hollow-faced iron serving as cutter and nicker on 631 contrasts with the separate cutter and forked nicker on 632. ); British, out of copyright

This photograph showcases two exquisite coach makers adjustable compass ploughs from the mid-19th century. Crafted with precision and attention to detail, these wooden tools are a testament to the craftsmanship of their time. The left plough, numbered 631, is made of stained mahogany and measures 17.1cm in length. It features a peg handle for easy handling and a hollow-faced iron that serves as both cutter and nicker. The right plough, numbered 632, is crafted from ebony wood and slightly larger at 17.5cm long. Its squirrel tail handle adds an elegant touch, while its separate cutter and forked nicker provide versatility in use. Both ploughs boast a single stem fitting into the stock, reinforced by sturdy lower gun-metal plates reminiscent of earlier designs by Gabriel's Ploughs. Additionally, they feature sprung-steel thread-adjustable fences that allow for circular and compassed work. These coach makers adjustable compass ploughs were essential tools in the world of woodworking during the Victorian era. Their intricate mechanisms enabled carpenters to create precise cuts and shapes necessary for crafting carriages used for transportation. Now part of the David Russell Collection, this print captures not only the beauty but also the historical significance of these traditional tools in agriculture and craftsmanship alike.
