EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the representation of Pope John XIII, also known as Giovanni or Ioannes, who fell victim to a treacherous conspiracy in December 965. During a violent riot led by Prefet Peter Cesi and the army of Count Rotfred of Campania, the pope was captured and imprisoned in the formidable castle of Saint Angel in Rome, Italy. The leaders of the Roman militia, including Peter, the Prefect of Rome, and Rofred, the Count of Roman Campagna orchestrated this sinister plot against Pope John XIII. On that fateful day - 16th December 965 - they successfully apprehended him and confined him within Castel Sant Angelo. Illustrated by Tancredi Scarpelli (1866-1937) for "Storia d'Italia" (History of Italy) written by Paolo Giudici in 1930, this artwork now resides in a private collection. The image showcases Scarpelli's exceptional talent for capturing historical events with remarkable detail and emotion. Through this poignant photograph print from Fine Art Finder's Holbarn Archive collection courtesy Bridgeman Images; we are transported back to a time when power struggles were rife within Rome's political landscape. It serves as a reminder that even those entrusted with protecting their spiritual leader can succumb to corruption and betrayal. This image offers us an opportunity to reflect on history's intricate tapestry while contemplating how such conspiracies have shaped our world today.
