EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph showcases the enigmatic figure of Duleep Singh, a man whose life was marked by both grandeur and tragedy. Born in 1838, he held the esteemed title of Maharaja during the Sikh Raj of Punjab, following in his father's footsteps as the ruler of Lahore and King of the Sikh Empire. In this portrait, Duleep Singh exudes an air of regality as he sits confidently upon his seat. His turban, intricately wrapped around his head, symbolizes not only his Indian heritage but also his status as a leader. The artist skillfully captures him in three-quarter length, allowing us to appreciate every detail of his majestic uniform. However, behind this façade lies a tale filled with exile and anglicization. After losing power to British forces at a young age, Duleep Singh was forced into exile and eventually found himself living in England. Here he became known as the "Black Prince of Perthshire" adopting Western customs and embracing an Anglicized lifestyle. This lithograph serves as a poignant reminder of Duleep Singh's complex identity - torn between two worlds yet forever connected to both India and Britain. It is a testament to the enduring legacy left by this remarkable historical figure who navigated through turbulent times with grace and resilience.
