EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stark contrast between two important examinations in 19th century Vietnam. On the left, we see the exams for military officers, while on the right, we witness the exams for men of letters. Created by Vietnamese School and housed at Ecole Francaise d Extreme Orient in Paris, France, this colour lithograph offers a glimpse into an era deeply influenced by Confucian philosophy. The examinations held every three years were of great significance in Vietnamese society. The successful candidates who passed the examination for men of letters held a prestigious position that was highly regarded. Known as Cu Nhan initially, they would be called Tien Si or "men of vast knowledge" after a year-long final examination. In this traditional setting captured by eArchives Charmet and made available through Bridgeman Images, we can sense the weight placed on education and learning during that time period. These exams represented not only a unique path to glory and wealth but also served as a testament to one's dedication to Confucian principles. The image evokes thoughts about social history and tradition in Vietnam - mandarins studying diligently to achieve success in their chosen field. It is an estampe populaire vietnamienne traditionnelle that reflects both cultural values and aspirations for personal growth within Indochine society.
