EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a precious piece of history - a 12th-century poem by Ibn Quzman, beautifully preserved in ink on paper. The artwork is a copy created by the Syrian School in the 13th century and measures approximately 0.22 x 0.165 cm. It currently resides at the Institute of Oriental Studies in St. Petersburg, Russia. Ibn Quzman, an esteemed poet from al-Andalus, holds great significance as one of Cordoba's most important literary figures. He was known for his Hispano-Arabic verses that eloquently depicted the power of memory and recollection. Although he passed away during the Almoravid dynasty's rule in Cordoba, it is believed that Ibn Quzman spent much of his time in Seville. The discovery of this collection of poetry in St. Petersburg back in 1881 added to our understanding and appreciation of Arabic literature from medieval Spain. The intricate calligraphy and poetic mastery displayed within this work are truly mesmerizing. The image also highlights connections between different cultures and artistic traditions, with references to zejel (a form of Andalusian verse), Proustian themes (alluding to Marcel Proust's exploration of memory), Islamic calligraphy, troubadour influences, and Arab-Spanish heritage. This photograph offers us a glimpse into the rich tapestry woven by poets like Ibn Quzman during a fascinating period when diverse cultural influences converged harmoniously on Iberian soil.
