Jules Dupuis-Delcourt

Jules Francois Dupuis-Delcourt (1802-1864), French professional balloonist, designer, inventor, and editor of a Paris journal, made his first balloon ascent in 1824. As an experimenter he devised an aerial lightning conductor, named "l'electro substracteur", based on a metallic balloon tethered to the ground by a metal cable to earth the electrical charge collected. The balloon was designed to be a copper cylinder with pointed ends, but he was unable fund its construction. He joined another inventor, Edmond Marey-Monge, who was attempting to construct a large, spherical copper balloon and in 1844 they attempted to launch it, but were unsuccessful

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jules Dupuis-Delcourt, a remarkable figure in the world of aeronautics and invention. Born in 1802, this French professional balloonist was not only an accomplished designer but also an editor of a prominent Paris journal during his time. In 1824, Dupuis-Delcourt embarked on his first daring balloon ascent, marking the beginning of his illustrious career. However, it was his innovative spirit that truly set him apart from others. As an experimenter, he conceived a groundbreaking creation called "l'electro substracteur" an aerial lightning conductor designed to harness electrical charges collected during flights. The concept behind this ingenious device involved tethering a metallic balloon to the ground using a sturdy metal cable. The balloon itself would be constructed as a copper cylinder with pointed ends to effectively channel any potential lightning strikes away from the fragile aircraft. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints at the time, Dupuis-Delcourt could not bring his visionary creation to life. Nevertheless, he joined forces with another inventive mind named Edmond Marey-Monge in 1844. Together they attempted to launch a large spherical copper balloon but faced unforeseen challenges that prevented their success. Jules Dupuis-Delcourt's contributions as both an inventor and writer on all things related to aviation and materials technology remain significant even today. This mesmerizing print serves as homage to his pioneering spirit and relentless pursuit of innovation in the field of aerostatics.
