An alley in the medina of Essaouira
Essaouira - the jewel of the Atlantica - is a small fortified port in western Morocco on the same latitude as Marrakech, between Safi and Agadir.
The Medina of Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage listed city, an example of a late 18th-century fortified town, as transferred to North Africa by European colonists.
This town was the setting for several scenes of the popular Game of Thrones and as Othello version of Orson Welles.
The town-planning was entrusted to the Frenchman Theodore Cornut, disciple of Vauban, who gave the city its present look, building ramparts and straight, wide streets.
When entering in the old Medina, you find yourself in the midst of an animated and joyful crowd, where everybody is going about his own business. There are no motor vehicles here, everything is carried by carts sometimes drawn by mules. What fascinates visitors are the white-washed house walls, the blue doors and windows which are reminiscent of Mediterranean islands. Owing to the straight main streets, you will have no problem finding your way and even if you get lost in the numerous small lanes, sooner or later you will find a main street again... or a dead-end

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of an alley in the medina of Essaouira, a true gem on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The medina itself is a UNESCO World Heritage listed city, showcasing its late 18th-century fortified town architecture that was influenced by European colonists. The Frenchman Theodore Cornut, disciple of Vauban, played a significant role in shaping the town's layout with his expertise in town-planning. As you enter the old Medina, you are immediately immersed in a vibrant and lively atmosphere where locals go about their daily activities. What sets this place apart is its lack of motor vehicles; instead, carts drawn by mules transport goods through narrow lanes. Visitors are enchanted by the sight of white-washed house walls adorned with blue doors and windows reminiscent of Mediterranean islands. The straight main streets make navigation easy for newcomers, while getting lost among countless small lanes can lead to unexpected discoveries or dead-ends. Notably, Essaouira has served as more than just a picturesque location – it has been featured in popular television series such as Game of Thrones and Orson Welles' adaptation of Othello. This stunning print from Amaia Arozena & Gotzon Iraola available at Fine Art Storehouse beautifully encapsulates the timeless charm and unique character found within Essaouira's medina.
