Old prison building at Presidio Modelo Prison on Isle of Youth, Cuba

The Presidio Modelo was a model prison of Panopticon design, built on Isla de Pinos (now the Isla de la Juventud) in Cuba. It is located in the suburban quarter of Chacon, Nueva Gerona. The prison was built under the President-turned-dictator Gerardo Machado between 1926 and 1928. The five circular blocks, with cells constructed in tiers around central observation posts, were built with the capacity to house up to 2, 500 prisoners in humane conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of the old prison building at Presidio Modelo Prison on the Isle of Youth, Cuba. Once a model prison designed in the Panopticon style, this architectural marvel was constructed between 1926 and 1928 under the rule of President-turned-dictator Gerardo Machado. The five circular blocks stand as a testament to history, with tiers of cells surrounding central observation posts. Originally intended to house up to 2,500 prisoners in humane conditions, it now stands abandoned and deteriorating amidst its suburban quarter location in Chacon, Nueva Gerona. Underneath a clear sky and bathed in sunlight, this color image showcases both the resilience and decay that coexist within Cuban culture. It is a powerful reminder of how time can transform even the most imposing structures into relics of the past. As you gaze upon this photograph by Danita Delimont from Fine Art Storehouse, you are transported to an era long gone but still etched into every brick and beam. The Presidio Modelo Prison serves as more than just an architectural wonder; it tells stories untold and invites contemplation about justice, freedom, and human nature itself. Whether you appreciate travel destinations or have an affinity for history's mysteries, this print will undoubtedly captivate your imagination with its silent yet profound narrative.
