Radcliffe Camera, Oxford Collection
The circular dome and drum of the Radcliffe Camera is one of Oxford's most iconic sights. Built between 1737 and 1749 in grand Palladian style, it is 140ft tall and topped by a spectacular dome which is the third-largest in Britain. Designed by architect James Gibbs it was funded by the estate of influential Dr John Radcliffe, who decreed in his Will that a library must be built. It has been a ‘camera’ (or ‘room’) since 1860 when it became what it remains today, a reading room of The Bodleian Library, which is part of the University Of Oxford.
