Activated platelets, SEM

Activated platelets. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of activated platelets attached to surgical gauze. Platelets are tiny blood cells that help the body form clots to stop bleeding. If a blood vessels gets damaged, it sends out signals that are picked up by platelets. The platelets then rush to the site of damage and form a plug, or clot, to repair the damage. The process of spreading across the surface of a damaged blood vessel to stop bleeding is called adhesion. This is because when platelets get to the site of the injury, they grow sticky tentacles that help them adhere. They also send out chemical signals to attract more platelets to pile onto the clot in a process called aggregation. Magnification: x7000 at 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of activated platelets, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image depicts these tiny blood cells attached to surgical gauze, highlighting their crucial role in clot formation to prevent excessive bleeding. When a blood vessel is damaged, it releases signals that activate platelets. Responding swiftly, these remarkable cells rush towards the site of injury and begin forming a plug or clot to initiate the healing process. This extraordinary phenomenon is known as adhesion – as platelets reach the injured area, they develop sticky tentacles enabling them to firmly adhere. Moreover, platelets release chemical signals that attract more of their kind to join forces and reinforce the growing clot. This collective effort is referred to as aggregation and plays an essential role in ensuring effective hemostasis. The magnified view at x7000 reveals the intricate details of this biological marvel while measuring 10cm wide. Through this visually stunning representation by Steve Gschmeissner from Science Photo, we gain insight into one aspect of our body's incredible ability for self-repair. This awe-inspiring print serves not only as a testament to human anatomy but also highlights the beauty found within our own health and well-being.
