Still Life with Checked Tablecloth
Gris, a master of disguised images, presents a table brimming with coffee cups, stemmed wineglasses, a large white-footed fruit compote (seen from the side and from above) containing thickly painted grapes, a bottle of red wine, a bottle of Bass extra stout ale with its distinctive red diamond logo, a newspaper, and a guitar. Yet this painting has another equally compelling identity: a bulls head. The coffee cup at lower center doubles as the animals snout, a black-and-white concentric circle at left is a " bulls eye, " the bottle of ale is an ear, and the sinuous edge of the guitar is a horn. The letters " EAU" on the wine label, which ostensibly stand for " bEAUjolais" can just as easily represent " taurEAU" (bull). (Source: The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from The Metropolitan Museum of Art showcases the genius of Juan Gris, a master of disguised images. At first glance, we are drawn to a beautifully arranged still life on a checked tablecloth. The composition is filled with everyday objects such as coffee cups, wineglasses, a fruit compote overflowing with luscious grapes, and even a newspaper casually strewn across the table. However, upon closer inspection, we discover another layer to this artwork - the hidden identity of a bull's head. Gris ingeniously transforms ordinary items into elements that form the shape of this majestic animal. The coffee cup positioned at the lower center becomes its snout while an intriguing black-and-white concentric circle serves as its "bullseye". Even the bottle of Bass extra stout ale takes on new meaning as it cleverly represents an ear. And if we follow along the sinuous edge of the guitar in the painting, it magically morphs into one of its horns. Further enhancing this visual puzzle are subtle details like the letters "EAU" on the wine label which can be interpreted not only as "beaujolais" but also as "taureau" (bull). Gris invites us to unravel these hidden symbols and appreciate his artistic dexterity. Through Still Life with Checked Tablecloth, Gris challenges our perception and encourages us to look beyond what meets the eye. This thought-provoking piece exemplifies his ability to create multiple narratives within one image and leaves viewers
