Allies Day, May 1917

A patriotic whirlwind overtook mid-town Manhattan as America entered the First World War in the spring of 1917. On Fifth Avenue, the British Union Jack, the French Tricolor, and Stars and Stripes were displayed prominently during parades honoring Americas allies. The colorful pageantry inspired Childe Hassam, who dedicated this picture " to the coming together of [our] three peoples in the fight for democracy." Hassams flag paintings were first shown as a group in New Yorks Durand-Ruel Gallery in November 1918, just four days after the armistice was declared. Thus, the works, originally created to herald Americas entry into the war, also served to commemorate its victorious resolution

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Allies Day, May 1917" we are transported back to a momentous time in history when America joined the First World War. The image captures the patriotic fervor that swept through mid-town Manhattan during this period. Fifth Avenue, adorned with vibrant flags, became a symbol of unity and solidarity as it proudly displayed the British Union Jack, the French Tricolor, and the Stars and Stripes. Renowned artist Childe Hassam was deeply moved by this colorful pageantry and dedicated his painting to celebrate the alliance between these three nations fighting for democracy. His flag paintings were later showcased at New York's Durand-Ruel Gallery in November 1918, just days after the armistice was declared. What initially served as a tribute to America's entry into war now held an additional significance – commemorating its victorious resolution. This print not only captures a visually stunning scene but also encapsulates an important chapter in American history. It reminds us of our shared values and collective efforts towards freedom and justice. As we gaze upon this artwork today, we are reminded of how alliances can bring people together even in times of great adversity.
