Bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus) resting on sea ice, Svalbard, Norway
The bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), also called the square flipper seal, is a medium-sized pinniped that is found in and near to the Arctic Ocean. It gets its generic name from two Greek words (eri and gnathos) that refer to its heavy jaw. The other part of its Linnaean name means bearded and refers to its most characteristic feature, the conspicuous and very abundant whiskers. When dry, these whiskers curl very elegantly, giving the bearded seal a raffish look. Fossils first described in 2002 indicated that, during the Pleistocene epoch, bearded seals ranged as far south as South Carolina

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the serene beauty of a Bearded seal resting on sea ice in Svalbard, Norway. The Bearded seal, also known as the square flipper seal, is a remarkable medium-sized pinniped that thrives in the Arctic Ocean and its surrounding areas. Its name derives from two Greek words, "eri" and "gnathos" which allude to its robust jaw structure. However, what truly sets this creature apart is its most distinctive feature - an abundance of elegant and curly whiskers that give it a charmingly rakish appearance. In this image captured by Danita Delimont, we are transported into the natural habitat of this magnificent animal. With no human presence in sight, we witness the bearded seal basking peacefully under the open sky on a bed of icy terrain. The horizontal composition emphasizes both the vastness of nature and the tranquility exuded by this solitary creature. It's fascinating to learn that fossils discovered in 2002 revealed that during the Pleistocene epoch, these bearded seals once roamed as far south as South Carolina. This fact serves as a reminder not only of their adaptability but also highlights our responsibility to protect their fragile Arctic ecosystem. Danita Delimont's stunning photograph captures not just an exquisite moment frozen in time but also invites us to appreciate and safeguard Earth's diverse wildlife for generations to come.
