EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the harsh reality of an informal settlement in Tudor Shaft, Krugersdorp, South Africa. Built on top of a radioactive uranium tailings dump, this community is living amidst extreme danger and deprivation. The shanty houses that make up this settlement are situated on highly radioactive mine tailings comprised mainly of uranium. The consequences of this hazardous environment are felt daily by the residents who have no choice but to call it home. They grow their vegetables in soil contaminated with uranium and allow their children to play in areas where radiation levels are dangerously high. Adding to their plight is the absence of basic amenities. There is no school for the children, leaving them without access to education and a chance for a better future. Running water and proper sanitation facilities are also non-existent, forcing the community to rely on polluted water sources tainted by acid mine drainage and heavy metals. This photograph serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing legacy left behind by gold mining operations in South Africa. It sheds light on the urgent need for action to protect these vulnerable communities from further harm caused by radioactive materials and lack of essential services. Through his lens, Mitchell Krog exposes not only the physical conditions endured by those living here but also highlights the social injustice faced by marginalized populations around the world.
