Smith Glacier and College Fjord, Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA

College Fjord is a fjord located in the northern sector of Prince William Sound in the U.S. state of Alaska. The fjord contains five tidewater glaciers (glaciers that terminate in water), five large valley glaciers, and dozens of smaller glaciers, most named after renowned East Coast colleges (womens colleges for the NW side, and mens colleges for the SE side). College Fjord was discovered in 1899 during the Harriman Expedition, at which time the glaciers were named. The expedition included a Harvard and an Amherst professor, and they named many of the glaciers after elite colleges

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of Smith Glacier and College Fjord in Prince William Sound, Alaska. As the viewer gazes upon this scene, they are transported to a place of tranquility and serenity. Prince William Sound is known for its stunning fjords, and College Fjord is no exception. This fjord boasts five majestic tidewater glaciers that gracefully flow into the water, creating a mesmerizing sight. Additionally, there are five large valley glaciers and numerous smaller ones scattered throughout the landscape. What makes College Fjord even more unique is its naming convention. During the Harriman Expedition in 1899, two professors from Harvard and Amherst discovered this hidden gem. In homage to their alma maters, they named each glacier after renowned East Coast colleges - women's colleges on the northwest side and men's colleges on the southeast side. As one admires this print by Danita Delimont from Fine Art Storehouse, they can't help but marvel at nature's grandeur captured within it. The towering stone cliffs surrounding Smith Glacier create a dramatic backdrop against calm waters that gently lap at its edge. This image serves as a reminder of our planet's incredible natural wonders while also paying tribute to higher education institutions that have shaped countless minds throughout history. It invites us to appreciate both the power of nature and human intellect simultaneously.
