Young male elk with horns eating grass, National Bison Range, Charlo, Montana, USA
The elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis), is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and Eastern Asia. Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, and bark. Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year. Males also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring), and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations that establishes dominance over other males and attracts females

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of nature's magnificence as a young male elk grazes peacefully on grass in the breathtaking National Bison Range, located in Charlo, Montana, USA. The elk, scientifically known as wapiti (Cervus canadensis), belongs to one of the largest species within the deer family worldwide and is among North America and Eastern Asia's most prominent land mammals. In this image, we witness the elk thriving in its natural habitat – a forest or forest-edge environment – where it sustains itself by feeding on various vegetation such as grasses, plants, leaves, and even bark. The male elk proudly displays its large antlers which are shed annually. These majestic creatures also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during their rutting season. This includes posturing to establish dominance over other males and engaging in antler wrestling or sparring matches. Additionally, they emit bugling sounds that echo through their surroundings; these vocalizations serve both to assert dominance and attract potential mates. Photographer Danita Delimont has masterfully captured this scene with no human presence visible. The horizontal composition allows us to appreciate every detail of this magnificent creature from a side view perspective while showcasing its full length stature against the backdrop of an idyllic outdoor setting during daylight hours
