Developing frog egg, LM

Developing frog egg. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a developing egg laid by a common frog (Rana temporaria). The egg has reached the early neurula stage. The neural plate (purple bottom centre) is present just before folding to form the neural tube. Several germ layers (tissue types) have also formed. The embryo will eventually develop into a tadpole, and then into a fully formed adult frog. The whole process from egg to adult takes around 16 weeks. The embryo development takes place at the frogspawn stages, and it takes around 10 days for the tadpoles to form from the fertilised eggs. Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a developing frog egg, offering a glimpse into the remarkable journey from egg to adult. In this light micrograph, we observe a transverse section of an egg laid by the common frog (Rana temporaria) at its early neurula stage. The neural plate takes center stage in vibrant purple hues, just moments before it folds and forms the vital neural tube. As we delve deeper into this mesmerizing image, we witness several germ layers that have already formed within the embryo. These distinct tissue types signify the beginning stages of organ development and set the foundation for future growth and transformation. It is truly awe-inspiring to witness nature's meticulous craftsmanship at work. Over time, this tiny miracle will evolve into a tadpole before ultimately transforming into a fully formed adult frog. This incredible metamorphosis typically spans around 16 weeks from egg to adulthood. Notably, during the frogspawn stages, where fertilized eggs are present, it takes approximately 10 days for tadpoles to emerge. The artist behind this stunning artwork is Steve Gschmeissner/Science Photo who masterfully captured every delicate detail with precision and skill. Printed at 10 centimeters wide with a magnification factor of x13, this visually striking piece serves as both an educational tool and an exquisite addition to any art collection or scientific display.
