Hibiscus pollen grains, SEM

Chinese hibiscus pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains on the anther of a Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) flower. Pollen grains are the male gametes (sex cells) of a plant. The grain has a highly sculptured outer wall (exine), which may assist in its dispersal by improving its adherence to pollinating insects. The characteristic surface of a pollen grain is used by botanists to recognise and classify plants. Pollen grains are microscopic, usually about 15 to 100 microns across, and just a pinch of pollen powder contains thousands and thousands of grains. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of hibiscus pollen grains, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The Chinese hibiscus pollen is highlighted in stunning detail, revealing its vibrant colors and unique structure. Each grain represents a male gamete or sex cell of the plant, playing a crucial role in reproduction. The outer wall of these pollen grains exhibits an exquisite sculpture-like pattern known as exine. This textured surface aids in their dispersal by enhancing adherence to pollinating insects. Botanists rely on this characteristic feature to identify and classify different plant species. Despite being microscopic, measuring between 15 to 100 microns across, the sheer abundance of these tiny grains is astonishing. Just a pinch of pollen powder contains thousands upon thousands of them. Through magnification at x400 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this artwork allows us to appreciate the hidden wonders within nature's smallest creations. Steve Gschmeissner's skillful use of computer-generated imagery brings forth an artistic representation that merges science and art seamlessly. Whether displayed for scientific exploration or aesthetic appreciation, this mesmerizing print serves as a testament to the remarkable intricacy found within even the tiniest elements of our natural world.
