Human hair, sem

Human hair (Caucasian, brunette), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The outer layer of hair (the cuticle) has overlapping scales of keratin. These scales are thought to prevent hairs from matting together. Hair is made up of a fibrous protein called keratin. Internally the hair shaft is divided into three concentric sheaths (layers) called the medulla, cortex and outer cuticle. Hair is non-living tissue. Hair grows from a hair root (bulb) embedded in the skin. Hair growth occurs when epidermal cells divide at the base of the root bulb. Hair is non-living tissue. Magnification: x350 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of human hair, specifically that of a Caucasian brunette. Through the lens of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we are granted an up-close view of the outer layer of hair known as the cuticle. This layer is composed of overlapping scales made from keratin, which play a crucial role in preventing hair from tangling or matting together. As we delve deeper into this microscopic world, we discover that hair is comprised mainly of a fibrous protein called keratin. Internally, the hair shaft consists of three concentric sheaths: the medulla, cortex, and outer cuticle. Each layer contributes to its strength and structure. It's important to note that despite its remarkable composition and complexity, hair itself is non-living tissue. The growth process occurs at the base of the root bulb where epidermal cells divide to initiate new strands. Steve Gschmeissner's skillful capture allows us to appreciate both the scientific intricacies and aesthetic allure present within our own bodies. With a magnification level set at x350 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this photograph invites us to marvel at nature's artistry on an intimate scale.
