Obelia medusa, LM

Obelia hydrozoan medusa. Light micrograph (LM) of a medusa (young polyp) from the Obelia geniculata hydroid. The circular shallow semi-bell has solid tentacles on the rim. At the center, is the manubrium, with oral tentacles for ingesting food. The four dark round areas are the gonads. The gonads on a single medusa are all the same sex, male or female. If the medusa is female, the eggs will be fertilised by sperm from another medusa via the sea, and the fertilised medusa will then develop into another hydroid colony. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an Obelia medusa, a young polyp from the Obelia geniculata hydroid. The image, captured using a light microscope (LM), reveals a circular shallow semi-bell structure adorned with solid tentacles along its rim. At the center lies the manubrium, featuring oral tentacles that aid in food ingestion. The four dark round areas visible in this image represent the gonads of the medusa. Interestingly, all these gonads within a single medusa are either male or female. In case of being female, fertilization occurs when sperm from another medusa reaches her via the sea. Once fertilized, this remarkable creature will develop into another hydroid colony. With a magnification level of x14 when printed at 10 centimeters across, this horizontal photograph allows us to appreciate every minute detail and texture present on this mesmerizing organism's surface. Captured by renowned photographer Steve Gschmeissner for scientific purposes rather than commercial use, this stunning piece offers not only aesthetic pleasure but also serves as an educational tool for those fascinated by biology and marine life enthusiasts alike.
