Trachel epithelium, LM

Trachea epithelium. Light micrograph (LM) of a vertical section through the pseudostratified columnar epithelium from the trachea, the tube in the throat leading from the mouth to the bronchus and the lungs. Cilia are seen across the inner surface (top). These help to move mucus along the trachea from the lungs to the mouth, removing dust, cellular debris and pathogens. Below the cilia are the columnar cells of the tracheal epithelium (pink), with their nuclei at their bases. Below those two layers is a layer of connective tissue (blue) and blood vessels (red). Magnification: x3300 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the trachea epithelium, a vital component of our respiratory system. The image, captured using a light microscope (LM), presents a vertical section through this pseudostratified columnar epithelium found in the trachea - the tube connecting our mouth to the bronchus and lungs. At first glance, one's attention is drawn to the delicate cilia that adorn the inner surface of this tissue. These hair-like structures play an essential role in maintaining our respiratory health by propelling mucus along the trachea. Acting as natural sweepers, they efficiently remove dust particles, cellular debris, and harmful pathogens from our airways. Beneath these cilia lie rows of columnar cells forming the pink-hued tracheal epithelium. Their nuclei are clearly visible at their bases, highlighting their active involvement in maintaining tissue integrity and functionality. The image also reveals additional layers below: a connective tissue layer depicted in blue and blood vessels portrayed in red. Together, these elements contribute to supporting and nourishing this crucial part of our respiratory system. With a magnification level of x3300 when printed 10 centimeters wide, this stunning visual representation offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both its scientific significance and aesthetic appeal. It serves as a reminder of nature's intricate design within us while emphasizing how science can capture such wonders for further exploration and understanding.
