EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Carboniferous period, showcasing a remarkable collection of fossils. Published in 1878, these wood engravings provide a glimpse into the ancient world that existed millions of years ago. The image features an array of fascinating specimens, each with its own unique characteristics. Among them are Rhodocrinus verus, Palaeocidaris elliptica, and Platycrinus triacanthodactylus - all representing different species from this era. The intricate details captured through the woodcut technique bring these prehistoric creatures to life on paper. Accompanying these marine organisms are Conocardium fusilforme and Cochliodus contortus, along with Pentremites florealis seen from various angles. These clam-like shells and spiral-shaped fossils add further intrigue to the composition. Notably present is Tristychius arcuatus alongside Spirifer hystericus – both exemplifying the diversity of life during this period. A beetle can also be spotted on the left side of the image, adding an unexpected touch to this ancient tableau. Additionally featured are Orodus cinctus and Goniatites Jossae – representatives of extinct cephalopods that once roamed Earth's oceans. Lastly, Fusulina cylindrica completes this extraordinary display by showcasing its distinctive shell structure.
