EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the 19th century, depicting a haunting scene of Cleopatra's deathbed. The image showcases the tragic end of Cleopatra VII Philopator, the renowned Queen of Egypt. Known for her beauty and dramatic life, she was a pharaoh from a Macedonian Greek family. In this engraved illustration, we see Cleopatra lying on her death bed, surrounded by her domestic staff. Her profile view reveals worry and fear etched onto her face as tears stream down her cheeks. Dressed in traditional clothing that reflects both Greek and Egyptian cultures, she exudes an air of majesty even in this moment of despair. The focal point is the Egyptian cobra coiled around Cleopatra's breast - an eerie symbol representing her chosen method of suicide. This venomous snake brings forth thoughts of horror and shock as it signifies the end for this powerful queen. The monochrome style adds to the somber atmosphere while emphasizing every detail with precision. The engraving captures not only the physical features but also conveys emotions through its delicate lines. This image serves as a window into ancient cultures and lifestyles, showcasing both their grandeur and their problems. It reminds us of Cleopatra's legacy: a woman who possessed immense power yet faced insurmountable challenges until ultimately meeting her untimely demise.
