Fernando de Noronha
Fernando de Noronha was discovered on 10 August 1503, barely a decade after Columbus first stumbled on the New World, by explorer Amerigo Vespucci. It was colonised by the Dutch, the French and finally the Portuguese, and until 20 years ago was a prison colony for criminals, gypsies and other undesirables, who were put to work building forts, making lime and weaving cloth. Since Darwin visited in 1832, the island has been a Mecca for naturalists and ecologists (it is now a national park). The island has just seven kilometres of surfaced road, the rest being dirt track and pathway, so buggies are the principal form of transport on the island. About 70% of it is protected, and development of any kind is drastically limited in the other 30 per cent. The island may be a wilderness, but its a domesticated, cared-for wilderness

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking beauty of Fernando de Noronha, an enchanting island nestled in the Atlantic Ocean. Steeped in history and natural wonders, this remote paradise has a story to tell. Discovered by explorer Amerigo Vespucci in 1503, it became a melting pot of cultures as it was colonized by the Dutch, French, and Portuguese throughout its tumultuous past. Once a prison colony for outcasts and criminals, Fernando de Noronha has transformed into a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and ecologists since Darwin's visit in 1832. Today, it stands proudly as a national park with over 70% of its land protected from development. With just seven kilometers of surfaced road winding through its rugged terrain, buggies have become the primary mode of transportation on this untamed island. As you traverse its dirt tracks and pathways, you'll be immersed in tranquility surrounded by untouched landscapes that seem straight out of a dream. The photograph showcases the island's pristine beaches kissed by gentle waves under dramatic skies at sunset. The horizon stretches endlessly across the vast expanse of water while sand dunes create an ethereal backdrop. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is truly a sight to behold – where nature's beauty reigns supreme. Immerse yourself in this stunning image captured by elzauer and let your imagination wander to this domesticated wilderness where every corner holds secrets waiting to be discovered.
