EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of various cereals, beautifully captured through intricate wood engravings. Published in 1897 by the talented artist ZU_09, this artwork provides a glimpse into the diverse world of grains that have sustained civilizations for centuries. On the left side, we are presented with an array of different wheat varieties. The rye stands tall and proud, displaying its spike in full bloom during one engraving and transitioning to ripe grain in another. Khorasan wheat follows suit, showcasing its golden-hued ripe grain. Einkorn wheat takes center stage with its own depiction of fully ripened grains. Durum wheat captivates us with delicate blossoms and husked ripe grains alongside unhusked ones. Common wheat graces us with images capturing both post-heyday spikes and matured grains while spelt or dinkel wheat presents itself solely through ripe grain illustrations. Emmer completes this side's display by exhibiting its own luscious ripe grains. The right side introduces us to oats and barley varieties that add further diversity to this visual feast. Hungarian oat impresses with its plump ripe grain while regular oat offers a similar sight but distinctively unique in appearance as well. Naked oat tantalizes our senses as it reveals both spiked heads and fully ripened kernels ready for harvest. Four-rowed barley exhibits husked and unhusked matured grains while two-rowed barley proudly displays only the latter form. Sprat Barley entices us with its own rendition of perfectly ripened kernels whereas six-rowed barley enchants viewers through blooming flowers alongside lushly developed grains. This extraordinary piece allows us to appreciate not only the aesthetic beauty but also the rich history behind these essential crops that have nourished humanity throughout time.
