EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a traditional Japanese woodblock print of actors in fan, designed by Utagawa Toyokuni. Born into a family of puppet makers, Toyokuni mastered the art of printmaking under the guidance of Toyoharu. Initially focusing on bijin-ga or images of beautiful women, his career skyrocketed when he delved into yakusha-e, creating striking portraits and scenes featuring actors. The featured image belongs to Kunisada Genji's double half-length portrait series from around 1850/51, depicting the twelve months of the year. With its intricate details and vibrant colors, this piece is a true testament to Oriental style woodblock art. The signature "Toyokuni ga" indicates the artist's handiwork while Minatoya Kohei served as the publisher. As part of my personal collection of original woodblock prints, this artwork transports viewers to an era filled with samurais and mythical tales. It exudes a zen-like quality that combines elements such as storytelling and painting within one frame. In this particular scene, we witness two male figures engaged in combat while holding fans—a unique juxtaposition between conflict and elegance. The ornate patterns adorning their attire add depth to their characters' identities. Immerse yourself in Asian culture through this mesmerizing portrayal that captures not only traditional Japanese customs but also evokes feelings associated with fantasy, romance, love for nature, and urban life. This vertical composition invites us to appreciate both the beauty found in design elements and the skillful representation of human bodies engaged in combative sports.
