EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing scene from Greek mythology, specifically from the epic poem "The Aeneid" by Virgil. In this image, we witness the fearsome Cerberus, the legendary three-headed dog and guardian of the Underworld's gates. Reverend Alfred J. Church's book "Stories From Virgil" serves as the inspiration for this illustration, beautifully brought to life by Bartolomeo Pinelli's designs. As our eyes delve into this enchanting artwork, we find ourselves drawn to Aeneas and Sybil standing before Cerberus. The Sybil holds in her hands a honey and poppy-seed cake, cleverly using it to lull Cerberus into slumber. This moment is significant as it allows Aeneas to continue his journey through Hades without hindrance or danger. The composition exudes an eerie yet awe-inspiring atmosphere with its intricate details and masterful use of light and shadow. It transports us back in time to ancient Greece, where mythical creatures roamed freely within fantastical realms. Whitemay's expert reproduction of this historical print ensures that every nuance is preserved for generations to come. Whether displayed in a personal collection or shared with others who appreciate classical tales like those found in "The Aeneid" this print offers a glimpse into one of humanity's most enduring mythologies – an invitation to explore worlds beyond our own imagination.
