EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment from "Stories from Virgil - The Death of Camilla". Illustrated by Bartolomeo Pinelli, this scene depicts the tragic demise of Camilla, daughter of King Metabus and Casmilla. Following the Trojan War, Camilla joins forces with Turnus' army to oppose Aeneas. In a daring challenge, Arruns, a Trojan ally, urges her to fight on foot rather than horseback. In an unexpected turn of events on the battlefield, Camilla falls victim to Arruns' arrow. As she breathes her last breaths, her loyal female servant Opis emerges as a Nereid—a sea nymph—and avenges her mistress's death by slaying Arruns. This heart-wrenching tale showcases both bravery and sacrifice in the face of war. Published in 1879 by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday in London, this remarkable print transports viewers back to ancient times through its intricate details and emotive portrayal. Whitemay's skillful capture allows us to immerse ourselves in this tragic narrative while appreciating the artistry behind Church's storytelling. Whether displayed as an homage to classical literature or admired for its artistic merits alone, this print serves as a reminder that even amidst conflict and loss, tales like these continue to resonate across generations—forever etching themselves into our collective consciousness.
