EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported to a pivotal moment in the epic tale of "Stories from Virgil - Iris Appearing to Turnus". The Reverend Alfred J. Church's masterful storytelling comes alive through the intricate illustrations by Bartolomeo Pinelli. The scene depicted here showcases the divine intervention orchestrated by Juno, as she sends her messenger Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, to deliver an important message to Turnus. As leader of the Rutuli, Turnus is informed that his adversary Aeneas is absent from his camp. This revelation sets in motion a series of events that will ultimately shape history. The artist skillfully captures the ethereal beauty and power of Iris as she appears before Turnus. Her radiant presence against a backdrop of vibrant colors symbolizes both hope and impending doom. We can almost feel the weight of her words hanging in the air as she delivers Juno's message with unwavering determination. This poignant image serves as a reminder that even in ancient times, gods and mortals were bound together by fate and destiny. It foreshadows Aeneas' eventual triumph over Turnus in battle, leading him on a path towards founding Rome itself. Whitemay's meticulous attention to detail brings this timeless story to life once more, allowing us to immerse ourselves in its rich mythology and profound significance for human civilization.
