EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the delicate beauty of nature, featuring a mesmerizing composition of a Silk Moth and Hawkmoth with a caterpillar perched on a branch. The image captures the intricate details of these fascinating creatures, allowing us to appreciate their unique characteristics. The first subject in this print is the Samia cynthia, also known as the ailanthus silkmoth. Although not as domesticated as its counterpart, the silkworm (Bombyx mori), this saturniid moth is renowned for its ability to produce silk fabric. Its vibrant colors and graceful presence make it an enchanting sight to behold. Next, we have Bombyx mori itself - the domestic silkmoth from the Bombycidae family. This insect has been cultivated for centuries due to its remarkable silk production capabilities. Its contribution to the textile industry cannot be overstated. Lastly, we encounter Acherontia atropos, commonly referred to as the African death's-head hawkmoth. Amongst three species within its genus, this particular moth stands out with its distinct skull-like pattern on its thorax - hence earning its eerie name. It is widely recognized and admired for both its size and striking appearance. This exquisite print originates from an original edition dating back to 1894 by Grafissimo found in "Die Thierwelt R. Bommeli". Preserved through time, it serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with nature's wonders.
