EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of Greek sculpture art from Olympia and Pergamon, Greece. Published in 1897, these wood engravings provide a glimpse into the rich history and artistic mastery of ancient Greek civilization. The first image captures the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, dating back to around 470 - 456 BCE. This remarkable piece is now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. The second engraving features Nike, a statue also from the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, created approximately in 420 BC. Moving on to Pergamon, we encounter a detailed relief depicting Atlas retrieving the Apples of Hesperides for Hercules. This relief originates from the Temple of Zeus at Olympia and dates back to 470-457 BC. Additionally, there is an intriguing depiction titled "Zeus fighting three Giants" which is a detail taken from a relief found on the Pergamon Altar currently located in Berlin's Pergamon Museum. Other notable artworks depicted include Hermes and Infant Dionysos by Praxiteles (ca. 340 BC), Bronze head of a boxer (about 330 -320 BC) discovered at Olympia and now exhibited in Athens' National Archaeological Museum, as well as Athena and Nike battling Alkyoneus with Gaia rising up from below – another fascinating detail originating from the Pergamon Altar. These wood engravings offer viewers an opportunity to appreciate these masterpieces without having to travel far distances or visit multiple museums themselves. They serve as timeless reminders that continue to inspire awe for both ancient Greek culture and its extraordinary sculptural achievements.
