EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this vintage engraving capturing a momentous visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to the HMS Resolute in the 19th century. The image showcases the grandeur of the British Royal Navy's mid-19th-century barque-rigged ship, specially designed for Arctic exploration. However, fate had other plans for the Resolute as it became trapped in icy waters and was eventually abandoned in 1854. Miraculously, an American whaler stumbled upon her and returned her to Queen Victoria two years later, symbolizing a remarkable tale of international goodwill. The significance of this print extends beyond mere historical documentation. It serves as a reminder of resilience and collaboration between nations during challenging times. Moreover, it highlights how objects can carry profound stories within them. In fact, timbers salvaged from the Resolute were repurposed to construct what is now known as the iconic Resolute desk. This very desk was presented to the President of the United States as a gesture of friendship between Britain and America. Duncan1890's expertly preserved print allows us to relive this extraordinary chapter in history while appreciating both its artistic value and historical importance.
