Woman riding Penny Farthing bike 1885 illustration

Bicycle from 1885
The penny-farthing, also known as a high wheel, high wheeler or ordinary, was the first machine to be called a " bicycle". It was popular in the 1870s and 1880s, with its large front wheel providing high speed and comfort.
The term bicycle came into use and began to replace velocipede in the 1870s. In Germany, Sachs (1887) and Adler were among the earliest.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1885, capturing a moment in history when women were breaking barriers and embracing new forms of transportation. The illustration showcases a courageous woman riding a Penny Farthing bike, also known as a high wheel or ordinary. This iconic bicycle was at the forefront of innovation during the late 19th century. With its towering front wheel and smaller rear wheel, the Penny Farthing offered both speed and comfort to riders of that era. Its popularity soared in the 1870s and 1880s, symbolizing progress and freedom for those who dared to ride it. As we gaze upon this vintage artwork, we are reminded of how language evolves over time. It was during this period that the term "bicycle" emerged, gradually replacing older terms like velocipede. Notably, companies such as Sachs and Adler in Germany were pioneers in adopting this new terminology. Preserved from my personal archives, this original edition print allows us to appreciate not only the artistic beauty but also the historical significance of early bicycles. Sourced from Gartenlaube magazine published in 1886, it serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant quest for exploration.
